Review by Bearded Robot guest writer Adam Longley…

When I first read that the mummy was getting a remake i thought “WHY” then it turned out that universal were creating a “dark universe”. Not to be mistaken for the DC Universe of the same name.

This universe would consist of Monsters such as the mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf man (which is scheduled for a 2017 release)…….so all of the old classic monsters from the classic horror films from a time where people were very easily scared. This is one of the biggest let Downs for me is that universal have not gone full on horror! Instead they have gone for more of a pirates of the Caribbean vibe…

The film itself starts as expected, much like the 1999 mummy film we’re sent back in time to watch the oh so familiar back story play out. That being said its nice to see a female in the lead (villain) role, played by Sofia Boutella who was the deadly assassin in the brilliant Kingsman.

Then we are introduced to the marmite man himself Tom Cruise who in recent years seems to of played the same character over and over again. This is (very) far from his greatest performance but he seem to fit in quite well with the tone of the film. The rest of the cast are some what dull with an extremely questionable bit of acting from Russell Crowe!

Throughout the flim there’s multiple forced jump scares by way of loud sound affects, which failed to make even me jump (I jump at my own shadow). I won’t get into any of the plot due to spoilers, but is very straight forward, with the only real problem being that they haven’t planted any roots for the “universe” to grow. There’s the usual open end that we see in most films which can lead to a sequel if the enough money is made!
This is obviously a little concerning, considering there’s 5+ films already lined up…and a few already have big names attached to them!

Taking all that into consideration i still really enjoyed the film you can’t complain about the amazing use of CGI and a lovely little easter egg from a certain franchise. By the end i found myself intrigued about what we will get from the next instalment (wolf man)… here’s hoping that they find there Iron Man, Captain America and plant the seeds of what could possibly be an exciting shared universe…

Adam gives this film 3 robots!
