The sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 neo-noir science fiction cyberpunk film; Blade Runner, is only a week away. Fans are eager to see if this holds up to the strange magic of the original, or if it will be another pointless sequel and be forgotten, all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain…

Well to keep you occupied and get your Cyberbrains in the mindset of this universe, three shorts have been created to help bridge the gap between the original film and its sequel (coming 35 years after the original!). While one of them is yet to be released, you can check out the other two below.

The first one is titled; Nexus Dawn 2036, and features the films apparent antagonist; Niander Wallace, who is a blind replicant manufacturer, and his meeting to discuss replicant laws with a character played by Benedict Wong.
It has a real dark overtone throughout and really does set up how Niander feels about his own creations.

The second is titled; Nowhere to Run, and stars Dave Bautista as Sapper Morton, who appears to be some kind of rogue Nexus-8 replicant. At first we get a feel as if he is just trying to make it and survive in this dystopian future, but soon he is discovered and must leave what little life he has tried to build for himself. The ending nicely hints towards how his role will fit into the feature-length film.

The third prequel is a 15 minute anime short created by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe, titled; Black Out 2022. It is the third of three prequel shorts that connect the original film with its upcoming sequel. It takes place three years after the original movie, when replicants are blamed for an electricity failure that throws cities into chaos.

While me, personally, am not a big fan of the original Blade Runner, I do, however, love the themes and the style of it. I love Dystopian Futures, Cybepunk, noir detective stories, and anything else Sci-Fi. I know that is quite a controversial thing to say, and it is not to say that the original is a bad film, I just wanted a little something more from it.
I am excited for the sequel and think that, if it is done correctly, then the two films will complement each other and it will make me like the original a little bit more.
I do have a little shadow of doubt over Blade Runner 2049, considering how bad Ridley messed up Alien: Covenant, but I am trying to remain hopeful. I think I might even head out to the cinema and actually watch it (a rare thing for me as I normally just watch stuff at home).

Be sure to check out the trailer and make your own mind up, but I do think that this looks really good.

Blade Runner 2049 comes out in cinemas on the 6th of October
